Lego theme park for Johor

The Straits Times/The Malaysian Insider

JOHOR BARU, Nov 21 – Lego, the Danish manufacturer of toy building blocks, is close to concluding a deal to build a theme park in Johor.

State authorities familiar with the project said a breakthrough in negotiations were proceeding well and preliminary works on “Legoland Malaysia” could start as early as June next year.

The project, to be sited on some 400 acres of land off Danga Bay, is expected to entail an initial investment of under RM1 billion.

Lego now operates theme parks in Denmark, Britain, the United States, Germany and Dubai. The theme parks, built entirely from building blocks, are targeted at young families and include the whole gamut of exciting roller coaster rides and a variety of other attractions.

Iskandar Investment Bhd (IIB), the investment arm of Iskandar Malaysia, is expected to be the local partner in the project. Speaking in Dubai last month, IIB managing director Arlida Ariff said that as many as three theme parks were being considered in Iskandar Malaysia.

It is learnt besides Lego, IIB is also pursing talks with Universal Studios and Disney Tokyo.

The plan is to have a core theme park covering 600 to 800 acres, and a few smaller theme parks of 50 to 100 acres each. Some 3,000 acres have been set aside for theme parks, including supporting commercial developments, in Iskandar Malaysia.

Discussions are for park operators to take up a stake in the theme parks so that they can have a long-term interest in these ventures.

Iskandar Malaysia so far…

Malaysia City now reveals upcoming proposed/approved urban megaprojects within Iskandar Malaysia, formerly known as Iskandar Development Region (IDR) and South Johor Economic Region (SJER). The list (may) excludes ongoing developments in Bandar Nusajaya – the future Johor State capital, Port of Tanjung Pelepas, Senai-Skudai and elsewhere within the region.
The Iskandar Malaysia, encompassing Johor Bahru and (Bandar) Nusajaya is a new major development zone in the southern Malaysian state of Johor, next to Singapore (Johor is often known as Singapore’s hinterland). It is named after the present sultan, Iskandar Al-haj. At 2,215 km², it is two-and-a-half times bigger than Singapore and 48 times the size of Malaysia’s administrative centre, Putrajaya. It is envisioned to draw investment and business to Johor and will be the biggest development project undertaken in Malaysia. Covering 5 economic zones, it is an ambitious plan to develop south Johor into a global metropolis, modelled after China’s Shenzhen which has greatly benefited from neighbouring Hong Kong. As part of the project, the state administrative capital will be moved to Nusajaya. A Disney theme park has been rumoured to open here as well. [Wikipedia Johor; Wikipedia Iskandar Malaysia; TheStar]

With the very high construction costs and political uncertainty today, these projects would most probably be affected in some ways.

Danga Bay Global City

OK… we all heard about the massive plans of Iskandar Development Region (IDR) that will transform the southern state of Johor into an economic powerhouse.

Very lately, one of IDR’s component, that is the Redevelopment of Johor Bahru or to be precisely the waterfront development of Danga Bay (in Johor Bahru) has been making headlines due to a more than RM1.1 billion corporate deal.

Sources said that upon completion of the corporate deal, there will be MORE things coming that will make Danga Bay the new vibrant hub of Johor Bahru city.

[July 2007] KUALA LUMPUR: Ekovest Bhd has (will) unveiled a RM19.2 billion integrated waterfront city project at the Iskandar Development Region (IDR) in South Johor, making it the first private Malaysian investor to announce firm waterfront development there.

Spread over 1850 acres and a total of 25km of water frontage, the initial plan is as below… (most probably still the current plan as well) …

Is this what they should re-name as yet another Global City (with reference to PGCC)… Danga Bay Global City or Johor Global City Centre?

Johor Bahru will change. Danga Bay is indeed gonna be a Vision City of the South.

Malaysia City wishes everyone a Blessed Xmas and a joyful New Year!

And as usual lookout for more Report on “Cooool” developments next year. See you in 2008!

Disneyland looking back at Malaysia… again?

Malaysia’s Khazanah, Disney in talks on theme park – report
Sunday, September 30, 2007
KUALA LUMPUR, Sep 30, 2007 (Thomson Financial via COMTEX) Walt Disney Co is holding talks with Malaysia’s investment arm Khazanah Nasional about developing a theme park in southern Johor state facing Singapore, a business paper reported Sunday.

The Edge, a business weekly, said Walt Disney officials met officials from Khazanah last week on developing a park in the Iskandar Development Region.

“They (Walt Disney) met Khazanah managing director Azman Mokhtar and had discussions with other top Khazanah executives,” it said.

But it said Khazanah was also in negotiations with other theme park players including Warner Brothers.

The Edge said Khazanah would make a decision on its choice of partner by year’s end.

The report comes amid ongoing construction work on the Universal Studios theme park in Singapore.

Muslim-majority Malaysia has embarked on an ambitious development plan to spread growth and jobs in Johor state, and has been keen to attract investment from the Middle East.

Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi hopes to attract 50 billion ringgit to the Iskandar Development Region over five years.
